An $845,000 project to strengthen two Otago bridges has been approved by the Otago Regional Council.
The New Zealand Transport Agency's highway and network operations requested the project be added to the 2012-15 Otago regional land transport programme.
The project would enable the Alexandra and Beaumont bridges crossing the Clutha River to be strengthened to take high productivity motor vehicles.
By including the project in the transport programme it qualified for funding from the National Land Transport Fund, but for that to happen the Regional Land Transport Programme had to be varied to allow for it.
Otago's regional land transport committee had approved the variation and forwarded it on to the council for its approval which it gave this week.
The variation would now be forwarded to the New Zealand Transport Agency.
