A website will be set up so people can track progress on the Dunedin Hospital rebuild.

Yesterday the Southern Partnership Group - the body steering the rebuild - had its first meeting for the year.

Recently appointed chairman Pete Hodgson said the website would take one to two months to set up, but he wanted as much information as possible to be publicly available about the estimated $1.6 billion project.

''We want to be as open as the rules will allow,'' he said.

Mr Hodgson has previously stated it would be built somewhere between the University of Otago and the Octagon, and that the group would make its recommendation for the site to Health Minister David Clark by the end of March.

Mr Hodgson said progress was made yesterday.

''We are still amassing advice and data and still testing the options,'' he said.

''It is an important decision for the future of Dunedin so it needs to get some serious attention, and we are using over 20 different criteria to try and weigh the various pros and cons.

''However, in the final analysis the site we choose will come down to an overall assessment rather than just dispassionate arithmetic.''
