Despite gloomy skies and a downpour or two, spirits were high yesterday as Dunedin residents donned Victorian garb to celebrate the 150th birthday of Larnach Castle.

The fete was the latest in a string of celebrations for the landmark, with exhibitions and dinners running throughout the year.

To ensure the history of the castle was remembered, an oral historian had been appointed to begin recording stories from the past 150 years, sales and marketing manager Deborah Price said.

"The historian will interview people who have a connection to the castle, so we don’t lose those stories.

"This beautiful building has a rich history, spanning the 150 years since it was built. It’s great we can come out and celebrate it."

Covid-19 restrictions meant the usual "spring fling" face painting was not available, but Ms Price was happy people had come out regardless.

"It’s not a great day, weather-wise, and we have a few restrictions, but it’s lovely that people are here and having fun."
