Rescuer left with sour taste

A good Samaritan on a skateboard has earned the praise of Dunedin police after he stopped to help someone being assaulted on Saturday night.

However, someone stole his skateboard while he was assisting the victim, who received serious head and facial injuries near the corner of Great King St and St Andrew St about 10.30pm.

Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said the assault victim was taken to Dunedin Hospital and a man in his early 20s was charged with assault in connection with the incident.

Dunedin police would now like to hear from anyone who knows the whereabouts of the 23-year-old skateboarder's distinctive Vanguard long board with green wheels.

• A Dunedin man was allegedly threatened with a knife during a robbery in the central city on Friday night.

Senior Sergeant Mel Aitken said the man was grabbed from behind and pushed into a wall on the corner of Bath and George Sts.

The attacker verbally threatened him, telling him he had a knife, before taking his cellphone and wallet.

The robber was described as a Maori or Polynesian male, with shoulder-length black dreadlocks, wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans.

Inquiries are continuing.

• A 52-year-old Dunedin man was arrested after allegedly punching a 72-year-old woman on Saturday morning.

Snr Sgt Aitken said the man punched his carer six times on the arm at a residential care facility on Larnach Rd.

The man will appear in the Dunedin District Court on Thursday charged with assault.

After allegedly assaulting his mother and a police officer, a 17-year-old Middlemarch youth will appear in the Dunedin District Court today.

Snr Sgt Aitken said he was caught breaking into a car in Middlemarch about 8.45pm on Friday.

Police arrived on the scene, as did his mother, whom he allegedly punched several times before being restrained by the two officers.

He then turned and spat up to 10 times at the officers, Snr Sgt Aitken said.

The teen appeared in court on Saturday morning and was remanded to reappear today, charged with assault, assaulting a police officer, theft from a vehicle and two charges of unlawfully interfering with a vehicle.
