Southern South Island researchers who have made outstanding contributions to health were celebrated in Dunedin this week. The annual awards acknowledge researchers and research initiatives at the Dunedin School of Medicine and Southern District Health Board.

Two research development awards of $100,000 over two years were presented by the school's research and enterprise director, Dr Gavin Clark.

Prof Philip Hill, of the department of preventive and social medicine, received an award to develop strategic expansion of research activities at the centre for international health and Associate Prof Gerry Wilkins, of the department of medicine, got the second award to research renal sympathetic denervation and the cardio-renal axis.

The School of Medicine Dean's Medal for research excellence was presented to Associate Prof Rachael Taylor, of the department of medicine, by Nobel Laureate Prof Peter Doherty.

Oncologist Dr Chris Jackson won the $15,000 Southern DHB Clinical Research Award for a rectal cancer initiative.

More than 80 people attended the award ceremony.

Recipients were. - Dean's Research Medal in recognition of excellence in research: Associate Prof Rachael Taylor, department of medicine.

Research development investment awards ($100,000 each over two years): Prof Philip Hill, department of preventive and social medicine, and Associate Prof Gerry Wilkins, department of medicine. SDHB clinical research award: Dr Chris Jackson, oncology. SDHB nursing, midwifery and allied health practitioners' award: Noelle Bennett and Annie Sutherland, oncology. Research support person award: Noel Jhinku, pathology. Research publication awards: Prof Philip Hill and Dr Lianne Parkin, department of preventive and social medicine; Dr Julia Horsfield, pathology. The best published paper by a PhD student: Dr Susan Jack, department of preventive and social medicine. Best health research poster awards: Dr Linda Berney-Meyer, Associate Prof Tony Poole and Mike Jennings, department of medicine. Gil Barbezat summer studentship prize: Joshua Erceg (supervised by the department of medicine).
