Sawyers Bay road safety film success

For pupils at Sawyers Bay School, being named runner-up in a New Zealand film-making competition was a double take.

Pupils in the school's year 5 and 6 class made a 90sec film about walking to school safely which was runner-up in the 2011 New Zealand Transport Authority Road Safety Movie Competition.

Sawyers Bay School teacher Gareth Swete said not only did the pupils win $500 for their school, they had created an educational tool for future generations.

"The movie was pitched for younger children and will be used to educate pupils at the school in the future."

The film was also available on the NZTA website for other schools to view.

Mr Swete said all of the acting, filming, video editing and publishing online was done by the pupils in about four hours, and he was delighted with their success.

Hundreds of pupils took part in the competition and Sawyers Bay School was one of 10 runners-up in the competition.

The competition was won by Katikati Primary School (Bay of Plenty) and Freeville School (Christchurch).
