Sex assault alleged on girl (12)

Police are investigating an alleged sexual assault on a 12-year-old girl in South Dunedin last night.

The incident happened between 7pm and 8pm on the corner of Kirkcaldy St and Bayview Rd.

The girl was walking to meet her mother nearby when she was dragged into a carport and assaulted by a male in his late teens.

Police today completed a scene examination and have also been speaking to people who live in the area.

Detective Sergeant Brett Roberts said the girl had provided a description of her alleged attacker.

Police are keen to hear from anyone who was walking along Kirkcaldy St or Bayview Rd between 7pm and 8pm yesterday who may have seen either the girl or a man aged 16 to 25, dressed in dark clothing.

Information can be provided by calling CIB staff on 471-4800 or anonymously via the Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.

Det Sgt. Roberts said normal care and vigilance with personal safety was recommended until a clearer picture of events emerged.
