Sexual health week 'amazing' success

Twenty people, including the main student organiser of the event, Jordan Taylor, recently took HIV tests at the University of Otago campus during an awareness-raising Sexual Health Week.

Mr Taylor, the Otago University Students Association education officer, said several hundred people had taken part in various events during the week, which was run by the Otago University Students Association.

Held last week, the education programme included a Sexual Health quiz night, a Queer Tea Party and HIV tests. Before the events started Mr Taylor had felt nervous and ''worried about every little detail'' but the week had been an ''amazing'' success and he hoped it would become an annual fixture.

''It was our first shot at doing a sexual health awareness week.''

''Its main aim was to raise awareness of the support that is out there for students and to impress upon them the importance of being safe with sex.''

There had been a ''good turnout'' for the testing, with results quickly available.

None of the tested students needed referral for medical treatment.

''I realise it's a pretty touchy topic for some but I believe that the more people who take the time to get a quick and free test the better.''

''Safe sex is an issue for young people, not just queer youth,'' he said.

The initiative, which the association's executive aimed to further develop in the future, had also been supported by the Southern District Health Board, Family Planning Dunedin, and the New Zealand Aids Foundation, the latter running the testing.
