A Dunedin woman who had a close shave with cancer is offering Otago businesses a unique marketing opportunity.

Anna Hoek-Sims (26) will shave a company logo in the side of her hair if a business gives $1000 to her fundraising effort for CanTeen.

''It's a unique advertising opportunity.''

Ms Hoek-Sims was diagnosed with cancer in 2013, aged 22, in her final undergraduate year at University of Otago.

Soon after the diagnosis, she began treatment, including chemotherapy and a bone marrow biopsy, to rid her body of tumours under her arm, on her neck and in her chest cavity.

Ms Hoek-Sims, a Rape Crisis community educator and University of Otago research assistant had been in remission for three years.

She did not dwell on being in remission.

''It detracts from what I'm doing right now.

''If I'm thinking about cancer all the time, it's hard to get out there and live life.''

She aimed to raise at least $2000 for CanTeen by April 9 and was nearly halfway.

CanTeen provided services for anyone aged between 13 and 24 diagnosed with cancer.

At the age of 26, she was a CanTeen alumna and wanted to help the charity.

''I'm trying to pay it back ... I probably wouldn't be here if CanTeen and some other integral people in my life hadn't been there to support me during my diagnosis.''
