This Taieri Mouth crib has been named joint supreme winner of a major design award.

The 55sq m property shared the honour with the Coastlands Aquatic Centre at the 2014 New Zealand Wood Resene Timber Design Awards held in Wellington on Tuesday night.

The crib was designed, and owned, by Regan Johnston, of Dunedin firm Mason and Wales, who was ''delighted'' with the win.

''Something that I, as an architect, considered so simple was actually recognised at that level ... Perhaps simplicity is its charm.''

The judges noted, ''It is a beautiful small house, made entirely appropriate for its use and setting in the landscape, using what are often perceived as low value materials in their raw form to provide a stunning harmony of simplicity and design.''
