Small increase in flights

Under Covid-19 Alert Level 3, Dunedin Airport will increase service, but only a Dunedin to Christchurch service remains available.

As travel restrictions eased today, Air New Zealand would fly an Airbus 320 to and from Dunedin to cater to increased demand, an Air New Zealand spokeswoman said.

"I don’t know people’s personal stories. There’s no way to tell that by their bookings.

"But what I can say ... is that we’re basically seeing a small spike, an increase in demand, across the week," she said.

Dunedin Airport would move from a skeleton schedule — a Monday and Friday 68-seat twin-engine turboprop Dunedin to Christchurch service — to an every day, seven days a week service between the two centres under Level 3.

This week, two turboprop flights would fly return between Dunedin and Christchurch, and today the 170-seat flight A320 had been added.

As New Zealand moves to Alert Level 3, beyond essential workers and emergency flights, those attending funerals and tangi can fly, as can those stuck in the "wrong place" during the Level 4 lockdown.
