A new Anzac-themed mural in Mosgiel has massive support from the district.

Mosgiel Business Association secretary Kristy Compton said Mosgiel RSA member Mike Court floated the idea for the mural on the ``big blank wall'' opposite the Mosgiel RSA in Church St.

Mr Court asked the association for its help.

The association contacted Dunedin artist Daniel Mead, who was given access to the Mosgiel RSA memorabilia room to create a concept for the mural.

An off-duty crew from the Mosgiel Volunteer Fire Brigade waterblasted moss from the wall before Mr Mead and fellow artist Tessa Petley began painting last November.

The artists have completed about 75% of the mural, which is due to be finished next month.

The items painted on the 18m-long brick wall included poppies, soldiers walking into battle and the words ``lest we forget'', Mrs Compton said.

``It's a pretty beautiful piece that everyone is very excited about.''

The association had applied for creative communities funding from the Dunedin City Council for the second time.

``We were turned down at Christmas but I'm pretty bloody determined, so I've applied again.''

If the grant was declined, the association would seek private donations from its members and the public to raise the $9000 needed to complete the mural.
