The head of St Hilda’s Collegiate School will step away for a year to guide fellow principals through Ministry of Education changes.

Principal Jackie Barron has accepted the role of Otago-Southland principal lead adviser for the Ministry of Education.

It is one of 12 new roles developed to support principals around the country throughout 2023.

Mrs Barron said she would be getting feedback from principals around the region and making sure they felt supported with their issues.

It would support the development of longer term positions at the ministry.

"It’s a great opportunity to be part of a solution."

She cared a lot about the education industry and was excited to learn more, which she could bring back to St Hilda’s as principal in 2024.

Utilising principals was a great way to make use of their skillsets in an area they were passionate about, she said.

She had spent time working in Gore and was familiar with Southland, so she felt confident representing both regions.

Mrs Barron will still be based in Dunedin and deputy principal Judy Maw will take up the role of acting principal.
