A last-minute effort to make costumes paid off for a group of friends who spent Saturday dressed as Beer Pong at the Dunedin Craft Food and Beer Festival.

The event, which drew  a crowd of more than  6000 people to Forsyth Barr Stadium, had various wild foods and more than  400 varieties of beer, cider and wine on offer.

For Jon Barakauskar and friends, putting together a group costume of human-sized "beer pong" containers was planned well in advance but  made in "a last-minute effort" just before the big day.

However, someone "forgot" to buy the ping-pong balls to complete the costume.

Mr Barakauskas painted some plastic containers bright red and strung the costumes across the shoulders  of the group members. Despite the lack of organisation, Mr Barakauskas said the costumes  brought them positive attention.

"Someone will ask to get a photo. It’s just a bit of fun."

It was entertaining seeing the reactions from people. It was the third time Mr Barakauskas had attended the festival.

The "official festival brew" for the 2017 event was "Saul’s Milk Stout" which  won the 2016 home brew competition.

The  competition was held again  this year.  The winner was  Harvey Kane’s Russian Imperial Stout,  "Session RIS".

Mr Kane’s prize  was  to  create the festival brew next year.

In addition to the variety of food and drinks, there was  entertainment throughout the day including a live karaoke stage set-up, circus antics by "MulletMan", children’s games, seminars and the headline act — Dave Dobbyn.
