When Dunedin's mayoral and council candidates were confronted with questions from students during an Otago University Students' Association election forum yesterday, they could have been forgiven for feeling their life was turning into a box of chocolates - they had no idea what they were going to get.

Twenty-two of the mayoral and council candidates for this year's Dunedin local body elections spoke at the forum run by the Otago University Students' Association at the student union.

It was an opportunity for them to introduce themselves to the student community and tell them about their plans for tertiary students in the city.

The forum also aimed to encourage students to vote before noon on October 8 when voting closes.

Each candidate had 30 seconds to explain who they were and give a broad description of their campaign policies for the city.

Ousa then gave the candidates three questions to answer: What are your student-centred policies? How do you plan to stay in touch with students? and Would you support a liquor ban in the North Dunedin/student area?

The forum closed with a brief question-and-answer session from the floor.
