Year 7 and 8 pupils from Dunedin and East Otago schools take part in the Otago Daily Times Extra! Current Events Quiz at Bathgate Park School last night.

Tahuna Intermediate made it eight years in a row when one of its teams won the year 7 and 8 Otago Daily Times Extra! current events quiz at Bathgate Park School in Dunedin last night.

It was a night for return winners as Dunedin's George Street Normal School won the earlier quiz for years 5 and 6 for the third time.

The year 7 and 8 quiz has been dominated by Tahuna Intermediate teams and this year was no exception.

Kaya Reese, Ethan Smith, and Oscar Te Morenga-Wakelin won the event with a score of 98 and the school's team three was third with 96 points.

As Kaya and Ethan had both previously been in teams that came second and third, they were delighted to win this year.

''It's a dream to win,'' Ethan said.

Second was Columba one with 97 points.

The year 5 and 6's winning team members, Max Cunninghame, Luke Geddes and William Tong, were pleased with their win but disappointed in their score - 98 out of 100. In 2012, the school's winning team got 99 out of 100.

Until the final round last night, the team had achieved a perfect score, something rarely seen in the competition.

But the last round, New Zealand general knowledge questions, pulled them up and they got two wrong answers.

Still, they were keeping positive, given that Luke and William had been part of the George Street team that won the Extra! spelling quiz in their age group recently.

Second was team one from Macandrew Bay School (91) and third equal were team one from Tainui School and team one from Silverstream School, in Mosgiel.

The quick-fire quizzes were split into 10 sections with questions on topics ranging from popular spreads to children's authors.
