The family of the teenager who died after being trapped under a waterfall in the Motatapu Gorge at the weekend have described him as a "lively, sporty young man" and asked for privacy to grieve him.

Dion Latta (15), of Nenthorn Valley, near Palmerston, survived being trapped upside down by his leg under the waterfall for at least three hours on New Year's Day.

However, despite the efforts of rescue squad members, he died in Dunedin Hospital the next day.

"His passing leaves a huge hole in our lives. He is irreplaceable and will always be missed," his parents, Logan and Sue and brother Cody said, in a statement released by police yesterday.

Dion loved farming, fishing, hunting, rugby and running and it was his "courage and determination" that made him such a talented all-rounder.

"He packed many things into his short life, which he lived to the full."

They praised Dion's friends, Wanaka search and rescue and Dunedin Hospital's intensive care unit staff for their "tireless efforts" to save their son and brother.

The messages of support from throughout the country, especially from friends, family and the John McGlashan community, which Dion attended, had been "overwhelming", they said.

"These messages have not gone unnoticed and are appreciated."

A memorial service for Dion will be held at the family farm on Saturday afternoon.
