Teen remanded over Undie unrest

The first of the people charged after the weekend's Undie 500 riots in Dunedin appeared in court today.

Police in riot gear faced off against up to 600 rioters in the city's Castle Street area on Friday and Saturday night and 67 arrests were made.

In Dunedin District Court today Tessa Gabrielle Rieger, 19, was remanded until September 29 on a charge of disorderly behaviour in Castle St last Friday night, The Southland Times reported.

Police said that two others, Hamish Thomas Munro, millhand, 18, and Jai Shonker Prasad, process worker, 28, both of Dunedin, did not have to appear after entering guilty pleas to breaching the Castle St liquor ban on Saturday,

The police officer heading investigations, Senior Sergeant Alistair Dickie, said students charged after the riots would appear in court on Thursday and Friday.

More arrests may follow once police have surveyed video footage taken on the two nights, he said.
