Teens to appear over alleged car theft, crash

Four teenagers will appear in court after a car was allegedly stolen from a Dunedin address and crashed on State Highway 1 near Balclutha early yesterday.

It is understood the driver was a 14-year-old girl.

St John spokesman Ian Henderson said two of the occupants, one a female, had moderate injuries and were taken to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance, while the others were assessed by St John staff at the scene.

Police responded to the single-vehicle crash about 6am, Detective Sergeant Hayden Smale, of Balclutha, said.

All four teenagers, aged between 14 and 16, had been referred to Youth Aid and would appear in court at a later date, he said.

"Police would like to thank the members of the public who came across the crash and provided the young occupants of the crashed vehicle with support,'' Det Sgt Smale said.
