Thefts spark reminder to secure homes

A "bit of activity" in North Dunedin over the weekend has prompted calls from police to secure homes and property.

Two burglaries and a theft from a car between 1am Saturday and and 6am today, has police concerned.

Senior Sergeant Liz Waru, of Dunedin, said there was a possibility the three incidents were linked.

"People do need to be more mindful of their security," Snr Sgt Waru said.

A car was broken into "outside cricket nets" on Butts Rd, North Dunedin, and $600 worth of property was taken sometime between 11pm Saturday and 1.30pm yesterday.

An Apple iPod, headphones, running shoes and assorted clothing was taken.

Thieves entered and took a wallet, an external hard drive and a vehicle key from an address on Forth St between 1am and 4am yesterday.

The property was taken from the victim's bedroom after a front door was left unsecured, Snr Sgt Waru said. The victim's car was not stolen.

About $2000 worth of property was stolen from an Agnew St address between midnight and 6am today.

"[The thief] has entered while the victim and two flatmates are asleep," Snr Sgt Waru said.
