It is the end of an era for Dunedin's single-head parking meters, but those wanting a souvenir could yet be in luck.

About 220 of the city's last single-head meters were removed from the streets at the weekend, making way for 150 new pay-and-display parking machines.

The changes were scheduled to be completed by this morning, when the new machines were due to become operational.

Dunedin City Council development services manager Kevin Thompson yesterday said it was possible some of the old metal parking meter heads could be offered for sale.

"No decision has been made, but I would think they would be available to the public.

"It's quite symbolic. This is the end of the single-heads that have been there forever. It's the end of an era."

Council parking meter technician Keith Randall, responsible for collecting the old meters, had 150 of them in his van when the Otago Daily Times found him yesterday.

He said some would be kept for those wanting souvenirs, while others would probably be shipped to Japan to be melted down.

Mr Thompson said other single-head meters had been sold, at $30 each, when the council began phasing them out three years ago.
