Tools stolen from Mosgiel new-builds

More than $10,000 worth of tools were stolen from two properties in Mosgiel at the weekend, spurring a warning from police for those in new subdivisions to look out for each other.

Inspector Wil Black, of Dunedin, said $10,000 worth of tools was taken from one new-build and $2500 from another.

Officers thought they had put the brakes on such offending following an arrest in relation to a recent spate of such thefts, but it appeared someone may have picked up where that alleged burglar left off, Insp Black said.

"It looks like someone has stepped into the breach.''

A witness had reported a suspicious vehicle around the time of the thefts, and that sighting was being investigated to see if the vehicle was linked to other incidents.

Insp Black urged residents to look out for each other and report suspicious activity, including noting down registrations of vehicles.

"In those new subdivisions just recognise that it is a risk and look out for each other, look out for neighbours, and any suspicious vehicles.

"If anything looks suspicious, note down the vehicle registration without putting yourself at risk.''
