The Road Transport Forum (RTF) annual conference was opened by Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull at Forsyth Barr Stadium yesterday.
It is the first time since 2005 the conference has been held in the city and about 380 people are expected to attend.
RTF chief executive Ken Shirley said the conference celebrated the important role of the road transport industry in the Southern region.
Speakers would include Transport Minister Phil Twyford, economist Cameron Bagrie and Helicopters Otago director Graeme Gale, Mr Shirley said.
Panel discussions would also address some of the major issues in the industry at the moment, including driver fatigue and impairment and training and qualifications.
In conjunction with the conference, the finals of the 2018 New Zealand Truck Driving Championship were held yesterday and the Road Transport Industry awards dinner was held at the Dunedin Town Hall last night.
