It looked as if  a large troupe of ballet dancers was late for a recital in Dunedin on Saturday.

Tania Hollis, the event director of Dunedin parkrun, said every Saturday for nearly three years about 100 runners had competed in the event, held at the Dunedin Botanic Garden.

The parkrun event was a weekly 5km fun run held in cities around the world on  Saturday mornings, including 11 cities in New Zealand.

As Saturday was October 22, the Dunedin chapter decided to wear tutus (two-twos) for the event.

"We had a blast; it was quite fun."

Themed runs were held regularly in Dunedin, including at Christmas, Easter and Halloween.

The volunteer-run social event was free and the runners and walkers were timed across the same course each week but it was not a race, Ms Hollis said.

The event on Saturday was the first time the entrants had worn tutus.

"I don’t think it will be the last because people seemed to really enjoy it."

The next time a Saturday falls on the 22nd of the month is in April next year.
