A University of Otago Campus Watch member was allegedly assaulted, two young people were arrested by police and a couch was set alight in Castle St, as a crowd of students gathered in north Dunedin last night.

Fire Service Station Officer Martin Jansen, of the Willowbank fire station, said police provided an escort for a fire appliance sent to put out the couch fire in Castle St, about 10.30pm.

The police car had travelled ahead of the fire appliance and firefighters had worn protective visors as precautionary measures, but the fire had been extinguished without further incident.

Students, celebrating St Patrick's Day, had been in good humour, posing with firefighters for photographs, Mr Jansen said.
