Dwindling supplies at Dunedin foodbanks have been bolstered with more than 1000 cans from participants in the Undie 500.

Salvation Army Captain Susan McGregor said the contributions had certainly helped the foodbank, which was out of food.

She saw the donations as a great way to put a positive light on a negative event.

"It's a commendable idea for them to do this," Each participant had been required to bring two cans which were delivered to foodbanks on Saturday afternoon.

Cans had also been donated to the Otago University Students Association foodbank and Anglican Family Care.
