University tech upgrade to cost near $2m

The University of Otago will spend almost $2million on technological upgrades in the new year.

The money will go towards upgrading the university's storage system and its internet traffic management system.

A university spokesman said the upgrade would replace equipment that managed internet traffic in and out of the university and was ‘‘at the end of its useful life''.

The university's storage system would also be expanded. It needed to be expanded because researchers were asking for more space, and more were moving data into the ‘‘central data centres rather than housing [the data] locally''.

It was also ‘‘a standard annual capacity increase to meet demand'', the spokesman said.

‘‘Each year the storage demand increases with more data/transactions being created in the systems that support the university's operations.''

The storage increase was expected to cost $1.4million, and the traffic management system upgrade was expected to cost $450,000.
