Warning issued over boat use

Police are warning people to take precautions after a boat and its users - who did not have life jackets or communication devices with them - were found at Taieri Mouth.

Acting Senior Sergeant Craig Baron said police launched a search after a vehicle and an empty boat trailer were found at boat ramp in Taieri Mouth about 9pm yesterday.

After ascertaining the boat users were on the Taieri River, police took a boat up the river to the check on them about 11.30pm.

The three men in the boat returned the vessel to the Taieri Mouth boat ramp about midnight.

``Police are pleased that they are safe and well but urge all boat users to take the right precautions.

``The occupants did not have life jackets on them or use navigational lights," acting Snr Sgt Baron said.

``They had not informed anyone of where they were going or when they would be back and didn't have communication devices, such as radios, on them.''

The area had no cellular coverage, he said.
