Rain and reading go well together indoors — but outdoors, not so much.

Volunteers spent the weekend collecting donations for the  Star Regent 24 Hour Book Sale. Organiser Alison Cunningham blamed  wet weather for the lower-than-usual number of books donated to the theatre’s annual fundraiser.

"We are a bit down on previous years and I would say that is entirely because it has not stopped raining for one moment," Mrs Cunningham said.

"Having said that, there were people waiting in the rain at each stop to give us books, and you can’t ask for more than that.

"You spend all your time trying to stop the books getting wet and all that happens is you end up wetter and wetter yourself, but that’s all right."

However, bibliophiles should not despair about the range on offer at this year’s sale as donations during the year had been steady, Mrs Cunningham said.

"They are comfortably in line with what we usually have."

Donations of books for the sale can still be made at the Regent,  BP service stations on Cumberland St, BP Mornington, and Port Chalmers Motors.

This year’s sale will be on June 8 and 9.
