Dunedin police are seeking witnesses to a "brutal and cowardly attack" on a 20-year-old man on Sunday morning.
Detective Sergeant Rob Hanna said the victim was walking in Moray Pl when he was allegedly attacked by a group of up to four people outside Dick Smith Electronics about 1.30am.
He suffered serious facial injuries, including a broken jaw, after being punched to the ground and kicked.
He is in Dunedin Hospital and will undergo surgery this week.
"This was a particularly brutal and cowardly attack, which appears to be totally unprovoked.
"We are very interested to hear from anyone who witnessed this attack or who knows who was involved," Det Sgt Hanna said.
The attackers were described as one female and three male Maori or Polynesians, aged in their late teens or early 20s.
They were last seen running along Moray Pl towards lower Stuart St.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Dunedin police on 471-4800, or Crime Stoppers on 0800-555-111.
