Woman remorseful over infraction

The woman who admitted storing almost 800 litres of potentially explosive chemicals in her Dunedin home says she has learnt from her mistake and hopes others will too.

Lien Duong (25) appeared in the Dunedin District Court for sentence yesterday, and was ordered to pay $25,000 in fines, and $3628.02 in costs.

She had earlier admitting storing 778 litres of acetone, isopropyl alcohol and EMA in the basement of her rented Mornington home.

Following her sentencing, Duong released a short written statement through her counsel, Max Winders, expressing remorse.

"I just want to say I very much regret my mistake and having put anyone at risk by my actions.

"I understand what I have to do and the [Dunedin City] council are now helping me to make sure I do not repeat my mistake," her statement read.

The prosecution had been "very stressful for my family and me", but she hoped some good could come of the publicity surrounding her case.

"I hope that any publicity means that no-one inexperienced like me repeats my mistake."
