A 78-year-old woman underwent surgery for serious leg and chest injuries after she was hit by a passenger van on the corner of George and Howe Sts, Dunedin, yesterday.

Acting Senior Sergeant Dave Scott said the Woodhaugh Rest Home resident was crossing the road on her mobility scooter whenat 11am  she was hit by the vehicle, which was turning right into Howe St.

She was taken to hospital and underwent surgery.

Acting Snr Sgt Scott said it appeared the driver had failed to see her.

The sun "may have been an issue" and police were appealing to any witnesses to contact them on (03) 471-4800.

The serious crash unit was investigating but it was too early to say what, if any, charges would be laid.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
