Youths in spotlight as Otago car thefts skyrocket

Otago car insurance theft claims have skyrocketed — an increase of nearly 250% in just one year.

Statistics from IAG New Zealand show insurance claims due to theft in the Otago region have climbed steeply, from 73 claims in 2022 up to 255 claims in 2023.

The top stolen car for both years was the Mazda Demio, which had a total of 40 claims in the two years.

Coming in second for 2022 was the Mazda Familia. Second last year was the Toyota Aqua.

A police spokesman said police had noticed an increase in car offences involving youth in the last year.

Otago youths getting caught stealing cars by police was also on the rise, with 62 people under 17 being caught in 2022, climbing to 85 in 2023.

"Our staff are dedicated to locating these offenders, many of whom are repeat offenders, stealing multiple cars in a night."

The police spokesman said when a youth was apprehended, they were either arrested, or referred to Youth Aid.

He said Youth Aid had multiple avenues with how to deal with youths stealing cars.

"Action taken will depend on factors including their age, involvement in the offending, previous history and family support."

AMI executive general manager of claims Wayne Tippet said the data collected showed vehicle theft rates peaked between 10pm and 5am.

"With theft increasing after dark, those who can should always park their cars in the driveway, lock the gate if they have one, or opt for a well-lit area if on-street parking is the only option.

"Steering locks still remain a cost-friendly security measure and effective deterrent for thieves."
