Accused serial arsonist rebuked by judge

An accused serial arsonist was told by a judge to act his age when he appeared in Palmerston North District Court on Tuesday.

Unemployed Awapuni man Christopher Tubman, 35, faces 16 charges including arson, burglary, and being in possession of tools for burglary.

The charges related to a string of attacks on schools and businesses in the city last month.

Defence lawyer Fergus Steedman indicated his client would plead guilty to "most, if not all" of them, The Manawatu Standard reported.

Tubman was told to act his age when Judge Gregory Ross saw him enter the court making hand gestures and faces at journalists.

He was remanded in custody until July 7 to give him and his lawyer a chance to examine the charges, including two new ones involving a burglary at the Manawatu Golf Club in May.
