A man walked up to an armed police officer shouting "shoot me, shoot me'', after a street fight with bats and axes in suburban Nelson yesterday.
Police received numerous calls from residents in the suburb of Stoke reporting a group of 10 men fighting, armed with bats and axes, about 4.45pm, Inspector Steve Greally said.
When police arrived there was no-one fighting, but two men were arrested shortly after.
A 23-year-old man initially resisted arrest and approached an armed police officer saying "shoot me, shoot me''.
The officer pepper-sprayed him before he was arrested and charged with possessing a knife and resisting arrest.
A 25-year-old man was also arrested and charged with possessing an offensive weapon, Mr Greally said.
Mr Greally said he was extremely pleased with the officer's decision-making in the situation.
"The result of this incident is that we have diffused a potentially serious situation quickly and prevented injury to anyone.''
The fight was not related to any organised group, Mr Greally said.
