One person is dead and firefighters were trying to free a second person trapped inside a car after it collided with a power pole in Rakaia, Canterbury, early this afternoon.
The crash occurred on Line Road, about 50km south of Christchurch at about 1.30pm.
Both fire and emergency services were at the scene trying to free a second person inside the vehicle, a Christchurch police spokesman said.
