Coach accused of sex lure facing more charges

A former Hutt Valley women's football coach who allegedly posed on Facebook as a female model to lure young women for sex appeared in court today facing a raft of new charges.

Alejandro Gonzalez Mendez, 36, is facing 20 sexual and indecent assault, drug and cannabis charges against 10 young women.

Police allege he sexually groomed, "blackmailed'' and supplied cannabis to the girls between April 2010 and September this year.

The Costa Rica national, who has a partner and two children, was remanded in custody until November 22.

He was first charged with indecently assaulting a young female in June.

Wellington District Child Protection Team officer in charge Detective Senior Sergeant Neil Holden earlier described the alleged actions of the former Wainuiomata Association Football Club women's coach as "damaging and serious offending''.

The Wainuiomata painter, who has been living in New Zealand for more than a decade, was stood down from the club.
