Crash driver fighting for life after police pursuit

A teenager is fighting for his life after a police chase that ended with his car smashing into a house.

The 18-year-old driver was cut from the car just before 1am this morning and rushed to Whangarei Hospital in a rescue helicopter.

Two passengers suffered less serious injuries.

Police said the Toyota Altezza had rear-ended another car stopped at a stop sign and a pursuit was launched when the driver raced away from a patrol car that had tried to pull it over.

Police are investigating.
