A 60-year-old man died early this morning after being knocked off his bicycle near Blenheim.
John Mayers, 60, of Blenheim was riding on State Highway One near Grovetown about 12.30am when he was hit, police say.
Mr Mayers was wearing dark clothing and did not have lights on his bike, and police said it appeared he ventured out in front of a heavy van travelling in the same direction, leaving the driver with insufficient time to take evasive action.
He was taken to Wairau Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the van and a passenger are assisting with inquiries, and an investigation is under way.
