Police have released the name of a 22-year-old man who died while boogie boarding at a Bay of Plenty beach at the weekend.

He was Sumit Goel, an Indian national, who had been living at Ohope, 6km east of Whakatane.

He and a friend were boogie boarding at Ohope Beach on Saturday when they got into difficulty.

Members of the local jet ski and surf life-saving clubs found Mr Goel lying face down in the water shortly after saving his friend.
