Guilty verdict in Auckland road rage trial

A high-flying market analyst accused of a road rage incident in Auckland that left another motorist with two broken legs has been found guilty.

Guy Hallwright, who works for investment banking company Forsyth Barr, had pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with reckless disregard.

Police alleged he ran down Sung Jin Kim outside Galbraith's Alehouse in Mt Eden in September 2010.

Mr Kim told the court he needed eight lots of surgery.

The court heard the dispute began after Mr Kim tooted Hallwright as they were waiting at traffic lights at the busy intersection of Symonds St and Mt Eden Rd.

Hallwright said he turned the corner onto Mt Eden Rd and pulled over. Mr Kim followed, still tooting, and also pulled over.

He said Mr Kim approached his car and after an exchange he drove away because his daughter was in the car and he was concerned about what Mr Kim was going to do.

Crown prosecutor Ross Burns said Hallwright could have sat in his car and did not need to drive off. He said Hallwright must have seen Mr Kim and must have known there was a serious risk to his safety when he drove off.
