Houses on the outskirts of Hastings were evacuated today after an ammonia leak was detected at a nearby factory.
The leak was found at Cedenco Foods factory in Railway Road, Whakatu, about 11am, eastern districts police communications manager Kris McGehan said.
Emergency services evacuated all houses within 300 metres of the factory and residents in the greater Whakatu area were told to stay inside their homes.
The leak was brought under control and cordons were taken down about midday.
Ms McGehan said there had been no reports of illness.
