Man beaten unconscious trying to break up fight

An 18-year-old man was beaten unconscious while trying to break up a fight outside a central Auckland club early this morning.

Witnesses said a group of six to 10 men tried to rush into Pyramid nightclub on Wyndham St about 2am after being refused entry by bouncers on the door.

The men started fighting with the bouncers, who were getting "completely rolled", one witness, who did not wish to be identified, told NZPA.

Three men who were waiting in the queue stepped in to try and break it up but got overwhelmed by the group.

One of them, an 18-year-old, was knocked to the ground and kicked in the body and head.

There was blood coming from his mouth and nose and he was not breathing at one stage, the witness said.

Inspector Chris Robinson said he was in a serious condition in Auckland Hospital.

The street was cordoned off while police conducted a scene examination and spoke to witnesses.

No arrests had been made.
