A 52-year-old man has appeared in court this morning charged with a violent assault on a Christchurch woman police say is in hospital in a critical condition.
Timothy Joseph Foley was arrested overnight in connection with the serious assault in Linwood yesterday.
Today, he made a brief appearance at Christchurch District Court, charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
His defence counsel Donald Dickson admitted it was a "serious matter" and did not make a bail application.
Foley was remanded in custody until June 18.
Meanwhile, police say the 41-year-old female victim remains in a critical condition at Christchurch Hospital.
The scene examination at the Worcester St property where the incident occurred is continuing today.
Police are also continuing to seek information on the movements of a car believed to be involved in the incident, a green Toyota Camry sedan, registration number ST 8323.
Detective Senior Sergeant Corrie Parnell said: "We have received a couple of calls from members of the public with information sightings of the vehicle, but would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the vehicle on Saturday or Sunday."
Anyone with information about the vehicle is asked to contact Christchurch Police on (03) 3637400 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
