An Upper Hutt man is in critical condition on life support in Wellington Hospital following a serious assault early today.
The 26-year-old was walking along Main Street, Upper Hutt after leaving a bar around 1am when he was attacked, suffering serious head injuries, Detective Inspector Darrin Thomson said today.
"This area has been cordoned off to the public and detectives from around the Wellington police district are making extensive inquiries."
Mr Thomson urged witnesses to contact police.
