The incident happened as the man from suburban Greerton was crossing the tracks at Collins Lane near Te Puke about 8.30pm, Senior Sergeant Glenn Saunders of Tauranga police said.
It appeared the man did not see or hear the train coming, he said.
The man's death has been referred to the coroner.
