A Christchurch man tried to make a girl believe she was partly to blame for his sex offending against her.
She was aged five when five years of abuse began.
The man began a 10-year jail term today, with a send-off from the public seats at the Christchurch District Court.
"Good job, your Honour," a man called out as the term was imposed.
"Rot in hell, you bastard," a woman called as the prisoner was led to the cells.
The mother of the victim - the man had been in a relationship with her - repeatedly broke down in tears in the back of the court during sentencing by Judge David Saunders.
The girl was now emotionally damaged and showed signs of post traumatic stress disorder. She was not at court.
"You indulged your sexual fantasies in a selfish way and robbed this child of the innocence of childhood," said the judge.
The 28-year-old unemployed man cannot be named to protect the identity of the girl.
He pleaded guilty to eight charges of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection - digital penetration and oral sex - and two of sexual conduct with a child under 12.
The Crown was concerned that photographs and a video of the abuse of the girl had been found on disks and on the man's computer, and the source of the images had never been found.
But defence counsel Tony Greig said the man assured the court the police had found all the material and no copies remained.
Judge Saunders ordered the destruction of the images of the girl now held by the crown.
"I am sure that it is part of her recovery process to know that the least number people possible are going to view these images," said the judge.
Mr Greig said the man had decided it was "the right and honourable thing" to admit the offending so the girl would not have to give evidence at a trial.
But crown prosecutor Lisa Preston said he had only pleaded guilty when his bail had been revoked because of a series of breaches, and the police had discovered the images of the abuse. That made a strong case "unquestionably certain".
The offending had a devastating effect on the victim and the man had taken steps to convey to her that she was somehow to blame in part for his behaviour, she said.
That was one of the "low-lights" of his offending.
Judge Saunders said the police inquiry began after the man's relationship ended with the girl's mother.
"Your behaviour towards this young person was truly shocking and bereft of any of the love and care that she was entitled to expect from you as a father figure. You coldly exploited her to indulge your own sexual fantasies and urges.
"The effects of your exploitation and dreadful abuse of this complainant will probably be life-long. That is a very high price for her to have paid for you to indulge your sexual fantasies."
He imposed the 10-year jail term, with a five-year minimum term before the man could be considered for parole. He said the man would need to complete a drug and alcohol rehabilitation programme, and the Kia Marama sexual offending treatment programme before he could be considered.
