Pursuit drama on Auckland motorway

Police chased two suspected stolen vehicles seen being driven erratically in Auckland early this morning, and they are still hunting for one.

One of the cars was on the fast lane of the Papakura off-ramp, and police warned that traffic was building up and may take some time to clear.

The drama began at about 5am when Waitemata police saw the cars being driven erratically on the Northwestern Motorway.

One was a stolen vehicle whose driver had failed to stop for police earlier in the night, while the second was also thought to have been stolen.

The pursuits began when both drivers sped off from police when signalled to stop and they fled south.

One of the pursuits was abandoned because the vehicle was travelling too fast and it was deemed unsafe.

The second vehicle was followed by a number of police on the Southern Motorway towards the Waikato Expressway.

It was seen turning around near the Te Kauwhata turn-off heading back towards Auckland with police in tow.

Police eventually used road spikes and the car finally came to a stop near the Papakura off-ramp.

The occupants were arrested.

Police are still searching for the other vehicle involved in the chase.
