Pedestrian killed in Bay of Plenty town

A pedestrian was killed after they were struck by a vehicle on the main road of a Bay of Plenty town this afternoon.

It was the 20th road death in little over a week.

The death was on State Highway 33 in Paengaroa, 50km northeast of Rotorua, shortly before 5pm, police said.

Police have closed SH33 between Rotorua and Te Puke, and diverted traffic down Allport, Royden Downs and Old Coach roads.

The route was unsuitable for heavy vehicles, police said.

Motorists travelling between Rotorua and Tauranga could consider using SH36, SH29 or SH2 instead.
