Police appeal for witnesses to Mother's Day hit-and-run

Police are appealing for witnesses to a hit-and-run in Nelson on Mother's Day which left a young cyclist badly injured.

The 14-year-old victim was riding near the Collingwood Street/Hardy Street intersection about 3.15pm on Sunday when he was struck from behind by a vehicle and thrown to the ground.

The driver did not stop and the boy received facial injuries, including damage to his teeth and was taken to hospital by ambulance. His bike was a write off.

A police spokesman said today that a number of people were in the area at the time and came to the boy's aid. He urged them to come forward.
